Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management systems, announces the results of the latest retrospective test conducted by the respected Austrian test lab AV-Comparatives. Kaspersky Lab’s proactive technology achieved its best ever malware detection results in the history of AV-Comparatives’ retrospective tests, beating 14 of the 15 other participants.
Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009’s level of malware detection in November’s test was superior to that demonstrated by virtually every other solution, including Symantec (44%), McAfee (29%), ESET (51%), F-Secure (9%), Sophos (26%) and BitDefender (46%).
Using only heuristic technology, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2009 detected 71% of over 11,000 new malicious programs that appeared during the first week of testing. At the end of the four-week testing period it detected 60% of the nearly 46,000 malicious programs used.
The experts at AV-Comparatives did not test for false positives in November’s test, instead using the results from the previous test conducted in August 2008. Despite the fact that August’s results were in no way related to the testing of heuristic and proactive technologies, the combined results of both tests meant Kaspersky Lab was awarded an Advanced certification level.
“These test results show that even if the user doesn’t update the product’s antivirus databases for a month and switches off most of the protection components, Kaspersky Anti-Virus is still capable of detecting and blocking at least 60% of all malware. It should also be noted that AV-Comparatives did not test our newest component – a unique application control module that significantly improves the detection level of unknown malicious programs. It is important to point out that in real-life conditions when all the integrated multilayered protection components are functioning in Kaspersky Lab products, the level of computer protection is much higher. This makes it possible to guarantee virtually 100% protection from contemporary IT threats,” commented Nikolay Grebennikov, Vice President of Research and Development at Kaspersky Lab.
Independent tests, including those conducted by AV-Comparatives, clearly demonstrate how the effectiveness of Kaspersky Lab’s proactive technology has gone from strength to strength, culminating in a record detection level for our product in the latest test.
“Rapid reaction to the appearance of new threats and a high level of signature detection have always been strong sides of Kaspersky Lab solutions. In 2008, we perfected the heuristic and behavior detection components, which was a tremendous breakthrough for the company in terms of combating new threats,” added Nikolay Grebennikov.
Retrospective tests are regularly conducted by experts on antivirus software, including AV-Comparatives, one of most authoritative independent research labs in the field. This type of test uses viruses that appear over the period of a month while the signature databases of the participating solutions remain unchanged from the beginning of the month. In other words, a solution has to withstand threats which it knows nothing about.
