Although rumors of the 'elusive' Rustock virus began circulating among IT security experts back in December 2006, it was not detected until May 2008. After Kaspersky Lab experts performed the top-priority task of implementing detection and treatment of active infections caused by the rootkit, the company’s virus analysts realized that many questions remained unanswered.
When was Rustock really created? How did it spread? Did it exist ‘in the wild’? Had users really been unprotected against the malicious program for over a year? To find the answers, Kaspersky Lab experts had to conduct an almost detective-like investigation using a variety of sophisticated techniques.
