Is dating now quantity over quality? New Kaspersky and Inner Circle - a global dating app that puts quality first research, reveals that over half (51%) of single women would use ChatGPT to increase the amount of people they are speaking to at one time, in a bid to increase their confidence and put them in the dating driver’s seat.
The findings are part of Kaspersky’s ‘Date or DAIte?’ research which surveyed single men and women in the United Kingdom to understand how artificial intelligence (AI) and specifically ChatGPT is impacting the dating world. The findings also revealed that 72% of women would happily turn to the AI tool to improve their chat up lines in order to snag a date and stand out from the crowd.
Crystal Cansdale, dating expert at Inner Circle, “There is a growing fatigue with dating apps right now as there is a lot of pressure on women to be ‘original’ and unfortunately as a result dating has become a numbers game. With AI tools such as ChatGPT now readily available, I’m not surprised that single women have said they would use it to help them stand out from the crowd, but we must remember that the use of chatbots is still deceiving and a real reason for concern on the dating scene. Authenticity is at the core of building relationships, and despite how ‘real’ a ChatGPT generated message can come across, it will only get you so far and ultimately it is not real.”
Perhaps surprisingly, despite the fact that most single adults would use ChatGPT to help with the language of love in real-time dating conversations, only 37% said that they would be open to using the tool to enhance their profiles.
Kristy, 39, newly single Bumble user: “For me, AI takes the authenticity out of dating and if I thought someone was worth speaking to then I would invest the time to reply myself. However online dating does require time commitment and I can see why people feel empowered or enabled by AI support. But what I would worry about is that I wouldn’t know if the responses I received were also AI generated – I have played around with ChatGPT and I can’t see any fault with what it generates, so I am not sure I could spot an AI reply. It feels like it’s a genie’s lamp we are best not opening, because if we lose the little trust we have in online dating, what do we have left?”
David Emm, Principal Security Researcher Global Research and Analysis Team, Kaspersky, commented on the findings, “Using ChatGPT or similar AI tools to juggle more conversations at one time and potentially increase the volume of dates secured might seem like fun and be a good way to empower oneself, but those using dating apps should be wary as you can quickly lose track of who you are speaking to and what data you are sending.
“Whilst AI chatbots might appear to reduce ‘dating admin’ and give you a ‘dating edge’ of rivals it can open a can of worms that can be hard to put back. Maybe it’s giving the wrong information away by mistake, maybe it is inadvertently turning yourself into a catfish. It is a fine line and people should be aware that what might appear good harmless fun, could have real world consequences. ”
