Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content management solutions, announces that its product Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7.0 has received the Gold Anti-Rootkit Protection Award from the authoritative information security portal Anti-Malware Test Lab.

A total of eight antivirus products participated in the Anti-Malware Test Lab test for the detection and removal of rootkits, including: McAfee VirusScan Plus 200, BitDefender Antivirus 2008, Trend Micro Antivirus plus Antispyware 2008 and ESET NOD32 Anti-Virus 3.0.

The test was conducted on a Windows XP SP2 operating system from 15 November to 10 December 2007, in line with specially-devised methodology. The purpose of the test was to evaluate the ability of popular antivirus programs to detect and remove both known and unknown malicious programs that use rootkit technologies to conceal their presence on a user system (e.g., masking files and processes). The effectiveness of the antivirus products to detect and remove rootkits was tested using samples that were both known and unknown at the time of testing. The final stage of testing involved a selection of proof-of-concept rootkits.

After the results were compiled, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 7.0 was declared the overall winner by the authors of the test and awarded the Gold Self-Protection Award. Three of the other products tested received Silver and Bronze Self-Protection Awards. The remaining participants failed the test and were deemed incapable of protecting PCs from hidden threats.

“The alarming growth rate in the amount of malware using rootkit technologies to hide their presence on a user system underlines the importance of the test performed by Anti-Malware Test Lab. No other respected test lab in the world has conducted this sort of research, while, with every passing day, the ability of an antivirus solution to detect hidden rootkit files is becoming more significant when assessing product quality,” commented Nikolay Grebennikov, deputy director of the Department of Innovative Technologies at Kaspersky Lab.

A complete version of the test is available on the Anti-Malware Test Lab website.
