The Kaspersky 7 Volcanoes Expedition: Australian summit scaled

12 September 2013

Abingdon, 12th September 2013 - Kaspersky Lab today announces the latest achievement in the Kaspersky 7 Volcanoes Expedition: mountaineer Olga Rumyantseva has reached the summit of Mount Giluwe, the highest volcano in Australia and Oceania.

The climb was a great success, with Olga completing the ascent in just one day. Although it’s a solo climb, Olga is not entirely on her own – Kaspersky Lab is enthusiastically supporting the renowned climber at every stage of the expedition.

Mount Giluwe is situated in Papua New Guinea and considered the highest volcano on the Australian continent. It’s location on the edge of the tectonic plate makes the area seismically active; there are multiple mountains and 18 active volcanoes on the island. Giluwe itself is not particularly active – the last eruption was more than 200,000 years ago.

Commenting after completing the fifth stage of her year-long expedition, Olga said: “Giluwe rises up to 4367 metres, so even the close proximity to the equator doesn’t make the weather particularly warm – there is snow on top of the mountain, and it often rains heavily. You wouldn’t call it a pleasant climate. Still, this time the main complication was not the mountain itself, but the remote location and inhospitable environment. I am very glad that Kaspersky Lab was supporting me in this faraway and risky journey. I’m now looking forward to the next challenge: the Mexican volcano Pico de Orizaba.”

Kaspersky Lab is proud to play its part in this challenge as well as other sporting events and geographic expeditions all over the world. These projects reflect the company’s core values: a determination to overcome boundaries and relentlessly pursue new goals.
